Middle School Principal Search

Dear Middle and Elementary School Parents:

As you are aware, our Middle School Principal, Mr. Vosburgh will be
retiring this June. While we still have time to celebrate his outstanding
career and contributions to our district, it is time for us to begin our
search for a new principal. We will begin our search by conducting focus
group discussions with teachers, staff, parents, and students to gather
input as to the qualities and characteristics expected in our next middle
school principal. Three parent focus groups will be conducted at the
following times:

Thursday, February 2, 2012, 7:00pm - District Office Large Conference Room
Friday, February 3, 2012, 1:15pm - District Office Large Conference Room
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 1:15pm - District Office Large Conference Room

The questions for the focus groups are below. We will also post these
questions on-line as a survey for any faculty, parents, students and staff
who are unable to participate in one of the focus group discussions.

We plan to post the middle school principal position in mid-February and
will begin to accept applications at that time. Focus group feedback will
be used to develop the advertisement and guide the initial paper screening
of applicants.

In mid-March we will assemble a committee consisting of teachers, parents,
students and administrators to interview candidates. We hope to recommend
a candidate to the Board of School Directors for approval at the April
board meeting.

Below are the focus group discussion questions:

1. Identify the qualities needed in a superior middle school principal.
2. Identify the strengths and skills essential for our next middle school
principal to demonstrate.
3. Identify key issues facing the middle school in the next five years
that our new principal will need to address.
4. Identify the obstacles to student achievement and the strategies our
next middle school principal will need to employ to overcome those
obstacles.
5. Other comments.

THE U FACTOR ON SATURDAY

This Saturday, January 28, the UCF Education Foundation presents The U
Factor, a musical celebration of the talent and spirit of students
throughout the district, to be held in the new UHS Auditorium. There will
be two shows, a 3 pm show featuring students in elementary school through
the 7th grade, and a 7 pm show featuring students in 8th through 12th
grade. Both shows will be unique and wonderfully memorable.

The Foundation has announced that the evening performance of The U Factor
will be dedicated to the memory of Josh Friedman, a beloved UHS student
who passed away in November. A tribute to Josh will be included in the
evening show.

The U Factor is a fundraiser for the Education Foundation. Ticket
purchases are 100% tax deductible and all proceeds will go back into UCF
District schools in the form of grants for programs, equipment, and
services that will have great value to our students. Tickets can be
ordered online at the Foundation's website: http://www.ucfef.org/ and will
also be available for sale at the door. The shows will begin promptly at
3 pm and 7 pm. The box office will open one hour prior to each
performance and those purchasing tickets at the door are advised to come
early. (Donations from families unable to attend are also gratefully
accepted.)

We hope many of you will be able to join us Saturday afternoon or evening
for The U Factor!

New Post! UHS PTO USED BOOK SALE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

As one of the UHS PTO's major fundraisers, we collect and process over
80,000 books in a period of one month. On Saturday, January 28th, we
"kick off" our fund raiser with the Neighborhood Book Collection Drive.
Sorting, pricing and packing books begins that day and we continue to
receive, and process until the sale on February 24th and 25th.

Our success depends on your help!! We have a job for everyone, from
sitting and pricing to running boxes and lifting.
The following Student and Adult Volunteers are needed on Saturday, January
28th (snow date - Saturday, February 4th):
• Drivers to collect donated books from the school district neighborhoods
• Sorting / Pricing from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm
After the 28th, we will be sorting / pricing every Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm till February 23rd as well as Saturday,
February 4th from 9 am to 2:30 pm. Please volunteer for a shift (or two
or three). We also need volunteers for the sale on Friday, February 24th
and Saturday, February 25th. Be on the lookout for more details on that
in the future.

The 2012 UHS PTO Used Book Sale is fast approaching and we need your
help!!

SENIORS
Seniors are reminded to bring in copies of their college decision letters
so that we can keep Naviance accurate and up to date. You are also invited
to enter the schools you've been accepted to on the I GOT IN list in the
Counseling Center.

COLLEGE VISITS
Juniors and seniors should be visiting college campuses as soon as
possible. It is recommended that you make an appointment if there is a
formal presentation. Many colleges keep track of your interest. Open House
information can be found on nearly every college's website.
Some schools have cut back on their travel and set up presentations in a
hotel or school to service a wider area.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COLLEGE

AMERICAN MUSHROOM INSTITUTE will award two $1,000 scholarships to
deserving local seniors pursuing post-high school education, such as a
two-year technological school, a three year nursing program or a four-year
college or university. Students considered for the scholarship should have
the following:

1. 2.5 minimum GPA
2. Economic need
3. 10 hours of community service performed in the past year
4. Candidates should submit the following with the application:

a. 500 word essay: "Describe the Health Benefits of Mushrooms"
b. Copy iof school or college acceptance letter,
c. Three references – one from a teacher, one from the community service
supervisor and one of the candidates choosing.
Pick up an Application from the Counseling Center. Completed paper work
must be submitted to Mrs. Biagiotti in the Counseling Center no later than
March 19.

Seniors and juniors are strongly encouraged to sign up NOW for scholarship
search engines. It is never too early to start looking for ways to pay for

ALERT Minor Bus Accident

This afternoon one of our busses was involved in a minor traffic accident.
The bus was carrying middle and high school students. There were no
injuries reported and the bus was able to continue to take students home.
We have been calling parents of the children who were riding the bus.

Additional Drivers needed for Book Sale Pickup on Jan 28

We are in need of additional drivers to collect book donations on January
28th. Get Community Service hours for your help.

Hours are flexible: you can make collections anytime between 9am and
2:30pm. You can check routes and sign up in the Main Office.

Reminder: After Prom Meeting Tomorrow (1/18); Cafeteria LGI; 9:30am

It is time to get to work on the After Prom.

Please come to a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18th, at 9:30 a.m.
in the Cafeteria LGI to finalize the theme and to share your ideas.

As you know the After Prom will be held at ACAC this year which means
there are many new possibilities. We still need people to chair the food
committee, the Game and takedown and if we do not get volunteers for the
Game, we may not have it. If these areas do not interest you, there are
plenty of other ways to get involved so come to the meeting and find out
how you can help.

NATHAN SMITH ADVANCES TO US JUNIOR NATIONAL COMBINED HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP!

Congratulations to UHS junior Nathan Smith for his selection to the US
Junior Men's National Team Combined HP Camp in Marin, CA, this coming
weekend! This camp includes the top US athletes selected from the West
Coast and East Coast camps in December, and gets the top US athletes
together so the Junior National coaches can see where they stand
individually and as a team. For more information about the great

UHS SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM NEWS
The Indian Girls Swimming & Diving team remains undefeated at 5-0 with
their win over Kennett 98-63 on Friday night. Junior Erin Polries and
Freshman Katie Garvey won both their individual events and Junior
Mackenzie Hornibrook won one individual event. Katie Garvey, Meg Musser,
and Katie Johnson swept the 100 freestyle event. Congratulations to the
following swimmers for their District qualifying times in their respective
events: Molly Wentz in the 50 free, Katie Garvey in the 50 free, and Laura
Barthold in the 200 Individual Medley. The girls team will be back in
action on Wednesday night against Padua.

The Unionville Boys Swimming & Diving team continued their win streak with
a 99-58 win over Kennett on Friday night. Senior Matt Drohan and Freshmen
Greg Buckley lead the way with two individual wins a piece. Sophomore Ben
Halkowski won one individual event for the Indians. The boys swept the 100
fly with Greg Buckley, Ben Porter, and Thomas Edwards taking first,
second, and third respectively. The team also swept the 200 free with Matt
Drohan, Brandon Smiddy, and Jason Smiddy taking the top three spots.
Congratulations to Greg Buckley for his District qualifying times in the
200 Individual Medley and 100 free. The boys will be back in the pool to
compete against Salesianum on Wednesay night.

Now that the holidays are over it is time to get to work on the After
Prom. Please come to a meeting on Wednesday, January 18th at 9:30AM in
the cafeteria LGI to finalize the theme and to share your ideas. As you
know the After Prom will be held at ACAC this year which means there are
many new possibilities. We still need people to chair the food committee,
the Game and takedown and if we do not get volunteers for the Game, we may
not have it. If these areas do not interest you, there are plenty of
other ways to get involved so come to the meeting and find out how you can
help. If you can not attend the meeting but want to be a part of this

This year's fashion show is an exciting, entirely new format--designed to
be worthy of our beautiful new UHS auditorium! Our show will be a
professionally directed America's Top Model production at 7 pm on Saturday
January 21. Tickets will be available online, at school and at the door.
This year we are adding a new feature designed to help students and
parents who are new to Prom: a full scale Prom Showcase in the UHS
Auditorium Lobby featuring displays and information for prom attire,
limousine services a, florists, and all of the components for a perfect
prom night. The Showcase will be open from 5:30 to 9:00 pm.

UNIONVILLE RECREATION ASSOCIATION (URA) BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL REGISTRATION
NOW OPEN!
URA is a community organization which provides kids from our school
district and local area a place to play sports. It is one of the few
organizations that brings local families together. The URA Girls Softball
Program is NOW registering girls of any skill level for play starting
mid-March and ending mid-June. Our softball program strives to properly
teach the sport of softball and keep it fun. Each division, as the girls
get older, adds another skill or two which introduce some challenges that
the girls will face if they choose to play on school/travel teams.
Senior: Ages 13-16 (Due to lack of players, travel season begins towards
the end of the school sports spring season. These teams are split into U16
and U14 teams which travel to games less than 1-hour away and also play
locally at the Abbey Miller Field.
All players are asked to attend one of the 3 preseason skills sessions
which take place in February. Coaches and commissioners will evaluate
players to be sure they are placed on the appropriate division. We do
allow players to play up or down if necessary.
Join us and come watch your daughters play a sport that encourages team
spirit and camaraderie. Please register at urasports.com as soon as

UCFSD
School-related stress, anxiety about grades, lost sleep, excessive amounts
of homework, fear of not living up to parent and teacher expectations,
temptations to cheat… Do your children identify with any of these
experiences? If so, they are not alone. Please join us to look at some of
these issues and discuss ways to find the right balance for our children
and our community.

The film "Race to Nowhere" sheds light on the high stakes and high
pressure culture that is a part of many children's lives at schools
throughout the country. The film by Vicki Abeles is a documentary that, in
the words of the film maker, is a "call to mobilize families, educators,
and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how best to prepare
the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading
citizens". "Race to Nowhere" has become a national grassroots phenomenon.
Over 600,000 people have attended more than 2,000 screenings in all 50
states and 20 countries.

Following the film, we will give parents the opportunity to share their
thoughts with others in the audience as well as with a panel of
professionals including: Dr. John Sanville, Superintendent; Jim Fulginiti,
CFPMS Asst. Principal; Jennifer Fulton, UCFSD Social Worker; and others

ALMA NEWLIN EDUCATIONAL FUND
The Alma Newlin Scholarship was established in the Fall of 1990 through a
bequest from Mrs. Alma Newlin, a resident of Kennett Square, PA.
The sole purpose of the fund is to encourage and assist high school
students, graduates and returning students from the southern Chester
County area to be prepared for and to gain employment in medical or
healthcare related endeavors. Grants will be made in the form of one-time
outright scholarships based on the decisions of a selection committee.
Eligibility to apply for scholarships from the Alma Newlin Educational
Fund is determined by the following criteria:
-Successful completion of high school or G.E.D. Program
-Demonstrated intent of applicant to further his or her education to
prepare for and to gain employment in a medical or healthcare field
-Record of academic excellence
-Residency in the geographic area served by Avon Grove, Kennett,
Octorara, Oxford and Unionville-Chadds Ford School Districts.

lives of over 30,000 young adults for thirty-three years. Scholarships to
Lycoming (up to $20,000) or Pennsylvania College of Technology(up to

Dear UCFSD Community,

On Monday January 16, America will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's
birthday by taking part in a Day of Service. Dr. King once said that
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for
others?" It is a question we all need to ask ourselves every now and then
- and we must answer honestly.

UCFSD and its entire community routinely put service above self. There are
countless examples of our children, parents and greater community
demonstrating care and concern for the world around them. Not many places
can say that.

As a national holiday, Monday will be welcomed as a day off by many,
however, in UCFSD it is a day ON. And on this day there will be many
things to do and be part of -- and they all matter. So please go to our
website (www.ucfsd.org) and look at all that is going on. There is
something for everyone - so pick your flavor and sign up!!

In addition, I encourage all of you to support the MLK CommUNITY Food
Drive that will benefit the Kennett Food Cupboard. Just one can or jar of
a non-perishable food item will make a tremendous difference for families
in need. Simply drop off a donation, none is too small, at Unionville High
School on Monday between 9:00 and 12:00.

to the immunization requirements for all students that went into effect at
the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. If you have not had the
opportunity to update your child's immunizations and communicate with the
school nurse, please review the changes at the link below.

After April 30, 2012, any student failing to meet these requirements will
not be allowed to attend school until the immunizations have been given

Good Afternoon,

We have a number of important events coming up at UHS that are
planned/coordinated by the high school administration. They include:

1. Martin Luther King Day of Service -- Students are invited to sign up
to volunteer on Monday, Jan. 16. Details are posted on our website.
Parents may elect to join UHS volunteers on this day, as well. We hope
your family considers being involved in this volunteer opportunity.

2. Midterms -- January 17 to 20. Please see the detailed information
posted on the website re: midterm exam schedules.

3. Course selection night is scheduled for Monday, February 6, 2012. A
letter was distributed to 9th, 10th and 11th grade students in homeroom
last Friday. Letters were also mailed to parents of current 8th graders.
A copy of the letter is also posted on the UHS website.

4. Farther off into the future -- PSSAs are scheduled to be taken by all
11th graders at UHS on 3/20-22 (reading and math), 4/19-20 (writing) and
4/26-27 (science). Additional details regarding these testing dates will
be shared in late February.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ORCHESTRA AND BAND STUDENTS SELECTED FOR DISTRICTS!
Congratulations to the 5 String players from the Unionville HS Orchestra
who were selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association
District 12 Orchestra. They are Hannah Nam, who placed 6th on Violin,
Edward Pyun who placed 2nd on Cello, Linda Sun, Alexandra Kimmel and Jack
Haley also on Violin. This district includes Chester, Delaware and
Philadelphia Counties. This is the highest number of string players ever
from Unionville-Chadds Ford. Nate Dalton was also selected for
Percussion! He placed third in the district. The festival and concert
will be at Garnet Valley HS on February 9-11 with the concert on the 11th.
All are welcome to attend.

UHS Band students were also selected for the PMEA District 12 Band and

Oboe . This was a great year for UHS instrumentalists at District. The
most students ever to audition and win places! Thanks to all the private
teachers and parents who supported this effort for Districts, and
congratulations to Band Director Scott Litzenberg and Orchestra Director
Janene Bostwick on this honor.

SWIMMING AND DIVING NEWS
The Girls Swimming & Diving team remained undefeated by winning their meet
against Oxford on Friday 100-70. Every girl contributed to the win, most
swimming their fastest times this season. Congratulations to the
following girls for their District qualifying times: Mackenzie Hornibrook
in the 200 Individual Medley, Erin Himes in the 500 freestyle, Erin
Polries in the 100 butterfly, and Emma Werkiser in the 100 breaststroke.
The team will face Kennett this Friday night at the Kennett YMCA.
The Boys Swimming & Diving team improved their record to 3-1 by beating
Oxford 93-68 on Friday. Congratulations to Matt Drohan for his District
qualifying swim in the 200 Individual Medley. Greg Buckley, Brandon
Smiddy, Tommy Ferree, Greg Tamargo, Matt Stalford, Jason Smiddy, and Matt
Drohan all won an individual event for the Indians. The team will face
Kennett this Friday night at the Kennett YMCA.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR AFTER-THE-BELL PROGRAM AT KENNETT MIDDLE SCHOOL,
1-24 TO 3/1
After the Bell is seeking student volunteers to help with their Fall Cycle
which will run from January 24th to March 1st. This after-school program
is a fun and easy way to manage your volunteer service hours! The program
has a variety of activities provided to Kennett Middle School students,
allowing any high school student the opportunity to engage with, and
mentor, these younger students, providing great service to the adult
volunteers as well. (You may even see other familiar UHS faces!) A one or
two hour commitment each week is all that is needed, however the
registration and orientation on January 17th is important and mandatory.
(You will need to provide your own transportation, so get some friends
together and come over to KMS. Share the ride!)

Ann Perry Employment Fund
Eugene Perry established the Ann Perry Employment Fund in memory of his
wife, Anne Perry. Anne and Eugene Perry had a lifetime interest in and
concern for the education and development of young people. Of special
concern was the provision of an opportunity to earn needed money for
education through meaningful work experiences. We are honored and pleased
that the Anne Perry Employment Fund at Kendal-at-Longwood was the
instrument chosen to carry out this worthy purpose. Available positions
are summer work from June through September. Applications will be excepted
Jan.1st through March 15th. More info in the Counseling Center.

Cecil E. Tate Scholarships
Named after the late Cecil E.Tate, who spent nearly 30 years supervising
special education programs in Chester County, the Cecil T. Tate
Scholarship is awarded each year to deserving special education seniors
presently enrolled in either IU or district-run classes, regardless of
exceptionality. This year $500.00 scholarships will be offered. The
recipient may use the scholarship to help[ defray costs relating to
post-secondary education. Examples of postsecondary education include:
vocational trainingprograms, adult educationat the CATS, attendance at
aproprietary trade school, or enrollment in college. Deadline to submit
application is March 23, 2012. More info in Counseling Center.

CAMP AND OPEN HOUSE
Society of Women Engineers and Widener University are so-sponsoring a
one-day Engineering Mini-Camp for girls in grades 9-12. The camp, to be
held Saturday, February 4, 2012, on Widener University's Chester Campus,
will bring girls who have an interest and /or ability in
science/math/technology together with practicing women engineers and
female engineering students. The camp is designed as a series of
"hands-on" laboratory activities that will highlight some of the
technology areas in which engineers work. The camp is offered free of
cost. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 150 girls, on a first-come

HOW FINANCIAL AID WORKS AND HOW IT MAKES COLLEGE AFFORDABLE FOR

Financial aid is intended to make up the difference between what your
family can afford to pay and what college costs. Over half of the students
currently enrolled in college receive some sort of financial aid to help
pay college costs.

In a Nutshell
The financial aid system is based on the goal of equal access- that anyone
should be able to attend college, regardless of financial circumstances.
Here's how the system works. Students and their families are expected to
contribute to the cost of college to the extent that they're able. If a
family is unable to contribute the entire cost, financial aid is available
to bridge the gap.

Who Decides How Much My Family Is Able to Contribute?
The amount your family is able to contribute is frequently referred to as
the Expected Family Contribution, or EFC. The figure is determined by
whoever is awarding the aid- usually the federal government or individual
colleges and universities. The federal government and financial aid
offices use need formulas that analyze your family's financial
circumstances (things like income, assets, and family size) and compare
them proportionally with other families' financial circumstances.

What the EFC Figure Means for Most Families
First, many families are unable to pay the EFC out of current income
alone. But, not to worry- the formulas assume that families will meet
their contribution through a combination of savings, current income, and
borrowing. Second, financial aid is limited. The formulas therefore
measure a particular family's ability to pay against other families'
ability to pay.

Three Main Types of Financial Aid- Grants & Scholarships/Loans/Work
Financial aid is any type of assistance used to pay college costs that is
based on financial need:

GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS
Also called gift aid, grants don't have to be repaid and you don't need to
work to earn them. Grant aid comes from federal and state governments and
from individual colleges. Scholarships are usually awarded based on merit.
The Pell Grant - One in four American college students receives a [

Grant, which provides up to $5,550 per year toward your studies. The Pell
Grant, which never has to be paid back, is for students whose families
earn less than $50,000 per year.

LOANS

Most loans that are awarded based on financial need are low-interest loans
sponsored by the federal government. These loans are subsidized by the
government so no interest accrues until you begin repayment after you
graduate.

Stafford Loans - A majority of college students find it necessary to take
out loans to help pay for their education. The [

federally-backed, low-interest loans that can provide you up to $57,000

annual taxes? If they do, they can take out a PLUS Parent loan to help pay

Loans have a fixed, low interest rate (currently 8.5%) and can be used to
cover your entire cost of attendance minus any other financial aid.

WORK
Student employment and work-study aid helps students pay for education
costs such as books, supplies, and personal expenses. Work-study is a
federal program which provides students with part-time employment to help
meet their financial needs and gives them work experience while serving
their campuses and surrounding communities.

Don't Rule Out Colleges with Higher Costs
Suppose your EFC is $5,000. At a college with a total cost of $8,000,
you'd be eligible for up to $3,000 in financial aid. At a college with a
total cost of $25,000, you'd be eligible for up to $20,000 in aid. In
other words, your family would be asked to contribute the same amount at
both colleges.

UHS SWIMMING/ DIVING NEWS

The Girls Swimming & Diving team remains undefeated on the season as they
beat a strong Pennsbury team 106-77 on Thursday. Junior Mackenzie
Hornibrook led the way with winning four events for the Indians. Triple
winners were Senior Emma Werkiser and Junior Erin Polries. Sophomore
Christina Tascione and Freshman Katie Garvey were double winners as well.
Congratulations to Cyndi Kline and Christina Tascione for their District
qualifying swims in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke respectively.
The team takes a break from competition over the holidays but will be back
in the pool against Oxford on January 6th.

The Boys Swimming & Diving team won a close, exciting meet 99-86 against
Pennsbury on Thursday. Senior Matt Drohan, Sophomore Ben Halkowski, and
Freshman Greg Buckley were triple winners for the Indians. Sophomore Tommy
Ferree helped open the lead at the end of the meet with wins in the 100
butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Greg Buckley qualified for Districts in
the 100 back and 100 fly as well as Ben Halkowski in the 100 backstroke
and 100 freestyle. The boys will be back in action against Oxford on
January 6th.

UHS SWIMMING AND DIVING NEWS
The UHS girls Swimming & Diving team improved their record to 2-0 with a
win over Garnet Valley on Friday night winning 108-72. Katie Garvey, Erin
Polries, and Mackenzie Hornibrook were quadruple winners for the Indians.
Erin Polries broke the pool record in the 400 meter freestyle and
Mackenzie Hornibrook broke the pool record in the 50 meter freestyle.
District qualifiers include Katie Garvey in the 100 freestyle, Erin
Polries in the 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle, and Mackenzie Hornibrook
in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 butterfly. Freshman Molly Wentz and
Quinn Benintende swam well for the Indians as well. The team returns to
competition on Thursday against Pennsbury.

The UHS boys Swimming & Diving team improved their record to 1-1 with a
win over Garnet Valley Friday night with a score of 102-81. Senior Matt
Drohan led the team with 4 wins and qualified for Districts in 3 events:
the 100 free, 400 free, and 200 free. Brandon Smiddy qualified for
Districts in the 200 free and 400 free. Tommy Ferree, Ben Porter, and Ben
Halkowski each won an individual event for the Indians. The boys return to
competition this Thursday against Pennsbury.

Good Afternoon,

As you may know, the UHS Winter Formal is scheduled for this Saturday,
December 17th. The following guidelines have been shared with our student
body, but I wanted to be certain that you were also aware of our
expectations for behavior at dances.

• The doors will open at 7 p.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m., so
students should plan to arrive on time. Ten o'clock is the official
end to our evening, but students are free to leave after 9:30 p.m..

• Students should bring their five dollar admission fee and a current
UHS ID. If a student has an out-of-school guest, he/she should turn
in the signed permission slip ahead of time, but they will be accepted
at the door; the form is available in the main office.

• Be certain that clothing, dance moves, and overall behavior at the
dance are all appropriate.

• Be certain to follow all school rules and treat each other
respectfully.

110-81. The Indians had two double winners: Freshman Katie Garvey in the
100 free and 100 back and senior Emma Werkiser in the 200 Individual
Medley and 100 butterfly. District qualifiers include: McKayla Mawn in
diving, Emma Werkiser in the 100 butterfly and the 200 Individual Medley,
Cyndi Kline in the 500 freestyle, Laura Barthold in the 500 freestyle, and
Christina Tascione in the 100 breaststroke. Molly Wentz, Erin Himes, and
Katie Johnson had strong swims for the Indians as well. The girls have
their next meet this Friday afternoon against Garnet Valley.

Friday afternoon 70-110. Freshmen Greg Buckley qualified for Districts in
his two individual events, the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, sophomore

sophomore Chris Barthold in the 500 freestyle. Ben Porter and Jason Smiddy
turned in great swims for the Indians as well. The boys are back in action

UHS FASHION SHOW STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE
This year during the UHS Fashion Show there will be a student design
challenge. The challenge is to create an outfit for $20 or less with
clothing purchased at Goodwills, thrift shops, etc. Altering the clothing
is encouraged and sewing is not required. Students may use safety pins,
glue, duct tape, etc. Materials other than fabrics may be used. The
outfits will be modeled during the Fashion show on January 21, 2012.
Students may model their own creation or have a friend model for them.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 2/24-2/26; APPLICATIONS DUE BY 12/12

The UHS Counseling Center is looking for students to nominate for the 2012
Rotary Youth Leadership Conference (RYLA Conference). This is a youth
leadership training program for enthusiastic students who have an energy
and desire to meet new people and discover their leadership potential. The

regarding student safety. The message mentioned violence connected to
local school districts. No students from Kennett Consolidated School
District have been implicated in any wrongdoing. We apologize to the
Kennett Consolidated School District community for this error. In
addition, police have not confirmed gang involvement regarding these

Student Safety Incident this Morning

This morning, a high school student was approached by a male in a dark
green SUV at a Pennsbury Township bus stop. When asked if she could talk
to the man, she felt uncomfortable, said no, and refused to approach the
car. The man drove off. The student has been interviewed by local law
enforcement and they in turn are coordinating with the Pennsylvania State
Police.

Our student did exactly the right thing in refusing to approach the
vehicle and reporting the incident immediately.

Our bus drivers are on alert to report any suspicious behavior. Please
join us in reminding your children to be cautious and mindful of their
surroundings.

The District wanted to bring to your attention a few incidents in the
Chester County area related to the safety of your children.

- An attempted abduction of a Phoenixville High School student as she
walked to CAT Pickering.
- Disturbing violence reportedly involving rival gangs in the Avon Grove
and Kennett School Districts which sadly resulted in two deaths.
- Several luring attempts in the West Chester Area School District

These and the sad events at Virginia Tech this afternoon should serve as
reminders that while we live in a wonderful community, we should not take
our safety and the safety of our children for granted.

The district has ensured that the staff involved in the transportation and
care of your children are aware of the recent events and will be vigilant
as they work to maintain a safe learning environment. Thank you for doing

Good Afternoon,

Here are some pieces of information about happenings at UHS that I wanted
to highlight for you:

1. 12/14 PSAT Results and Information Night: All 10th grade students
should plan to attend "PSAT Information Night- Understanding Your
PSAT/NMSQT Results & An Introduction to~My College QuickStart" on December
14th at 7:00pm in the UHS auditorium. We will distribute PSAT results at
6:45pm to 10th graders only, and the presentation will begin at 7:00pm.
If you plan to take the SAT in the future, you should attend this
presentation. The information and resources available through this
presentation are invaluable. If you are not able to attend this 10th
grade presentation, the powerpoint slides are available on the UHS
Counseling website for your information. PSAT scores for 10th graders who
do not attend this session will be distributed in homerooms on Thursday,
Dec. 15.

Also, PSAT results for 11th grade students will be distributed in
homeroom on December 14th. Any 11th grade student/parent who was unable
to attend last year's presentation as a 10th grader is encouraged to
attend the presentation on 12/14, as described above, so that you have
important information on how to improve your SAT score. A copy of the
presentation will be available on the counseling center website for those
who are unable to attend the event.

2. Many thanks to our 10th grade class officers, especially Jillian
Malone, 10th grade class president, for their work to organize a very
successful canned food drive in the month of November. I had offered to
make a breakfast for the homeroom that brought in the most canned goods,
and the winner of that challenge was Mr. Brun's homeroom. Those
kind-hearted students asked that I make a monetary donation to the Kennett
Food Cupboard instead of making them breakfast! Kudos to the class
officers, everyone who donated, and especially to Mr. Brun's generous
homeroom students for bringing in 288 cans and forgoing a yummy breakfast.

3. If your child is a UHS graduate who would like to visit a beloved
teacher over his/her winter break from college, please ask them to follow
these directions: 1) email the teacher you would like to visit and
arrange for a convenient time when the teacher is not tied up teaching a
class; then print out a copy of the teacher's email response indicating
the best time to visit and bring that email to the Main Office. We will
give you a visitor's pass based on that teacher's invitation. OR 2) come
to the Main Office after 2:20 pm and we will direct you to the teacher's
classroom.

Good Morning,

I wanted to share some information with you that was presented at Monday
night's School Board meeting as a part of the district Achievement Report.
As you'll see, the information below relates to standardized test
information, and it reflects very well on the work of students, teachers
and parents of UHS. All of us who work with your children know that these
"data points" are only one part of the important work that we do with
students -- we are also focus on the social and emotional needs of our
teens.

Sad News for the UHS Community

Dear UHS Community Members,

I am so sorry to have to share the news that Joshua Friedman, an 11th
grade member of UHS who has been very ill, died on Friday. While Josh has
not attended UHS this school year, I know that everyone who knew him has
fond memories of his tenacious spirit and quick smile. Students who knew
Josh through Best Buddies club and the UHS theater program have been
especially impacted by this news.

I made a building-wide announcement this morning, and we all joined
together in a time of silence in memory of Josh. I also told students
that they should feel free to talk with their guidance counselor if they
need support to work through their grief.

In speaking with Mr. Friedman this weekend, I assured him that our school
community would be holding the Friedman family in our thoughts and
prayers. Mr. Friedman gave me permission to share information with our
students, teachers and parents.

FASHION SHOW - JUNIOR AND SENIOR BOYS NEEDED TO MODEL
Sign up in the main office. Community service hours are awarded for
involvement in this event and each boy will be automatically entered in to
the raffle for a free tuxedo rental.
The fashion show is on 21 January with a dress rehearsal on 20 January. We
have snow dates for 24 February and 25 February.

UCFSD COAT DRIVE
Ready to Clean out your Closets? Want to Help out a Great Cause?
Then don't forget the UCFSD Community Coat Drive!!
On Saturday December 17th, along with the Bike Drive, UCFSD Community
Service gives away gently used warm coats, fleece jackets, hats,
mittens/gloves and snow pants to local families in need. Donated items can
be dropped off in the lobbies of any of the UCF district schools now until
Thursday 12/15. Items should be clean and in good condition. All styles
and sizes are needed. New items are also gladly accepted!
Volunteers are needed to set up and assist families with selections on
12/17.
If you would like to help out with the Coat Drive please contact Ann

Community Service hours can be earned by organizing coat donations within
your church organizations or neighborhoods.

2011 UHS PTO PROJECTS A HUGE SUCCESS!!

Hundreds of parents, students, teachers and staff members work hard each
year raising money through various PTO fund raisers. The bulk of this
money goes toward "PTO Projects Requests," which are grants that are
submitted to the PTO by teachers, staff members, and parents. The purpose
of these grants is to contribute to, supplement, and enhance the
educational experience of all students at UHS.

This year has been an exciting success for Unionville High School PTO
Projects, with 31 requests approved and over $43,000 paid out to teachers
and staff. Following is a list of Projects approved for this 2011-12

Wellness Committee Update

Dear Families,

This year our school district is reviewing our Wellness Policy. This
comprehensive policy addresses food and beverages in our schools. We have
formed a committee of parents, administrators, staff, and students to
review the entire policy. This committee will be meeting regularly for the
next several months and will review different areas of the policy at each
meeting.

The area of discussion for the upcoming meeting will be reviewing the
policy on Food and Beverages in the Classroom for classroom parties and
activities. The current policy states the following regarding food
provided to students in school: "Foods shall be single-serve when
practical and in a variety to offer a choice of snacks that promote
healthy eating." Based on this policy we have strongly encouraged parents
to provide a healthy alternative when bringing food into the classroom.
Also parents should always contact the classroom teacher before bringing
in food to share with the class. Classroom teachers can inform parents of
possible food allergy concerns and other classroom restrictions.

The entire Wellness Policy can be viewed at the district website at

meeting will be on November 18, 2011.
